Nathan Fillion

  1. David Boreanaz, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, TV, 1997.    The Canadian was up for Angel (real name: Liam) when the show was first cast in late 1996. He ended  up as the twisted preacher, Caleb, in the seventh and final season. He never met Buffy boss Joss Whedon until winning Captain Mal Reynolds in Firefly, 2002-2003.  An uncredited exec producer of the show was Dolly Parton’s Sandollar combine.  Oh, and Buffy was the original  name of… Yoda!
  2. Jake Weber, Dawn of the Dead, 2003.      Auditioned for the role of Michael.  But lost to Patricia Arquette’s future sleep-deprived husband in Medium, TV, 2005-211.
  3. Jefffey Dean Morgan, Watchmen, 2008.    Not so much “Who watches the watchmen?” as Juvenal asked, but who playeth them?  And in the 20 years it took for Alan Moore’s  DComic-book to be filmed,  directors came and went – Darren Aronofsky, Michael Bay, Tim Burton, Terry Gilliam and  Paul  Greengrass to, ultimately, the lesser  Zack Snyder.  So did their choices for Edward Morgan Blake aka The Comedian:  Fillion, Gary Busey, Thomas Jane, Tommy Lee Jones, Ron Perlman.
  4. Patrick Wilson, Watchmen, 2008.    Fillion was also shortlisted for… Dan Dreiberg aka Nite Owl As were Kevin Costner, John Cusack, Nathan Filliion, Richard Gere and Joaquin Phoenix.
  5. Ryan Reynolds, Green Lantern, 2010.   Directors changed (Kevin Smith, Zack Snyder, Quentin Tarantino and even the producer Greg Berlanti) as often as the superhero hero – Fillion, Jack Black, Bradley Cooper, Brian Austin Green, Emile Hirsch, Jared Leto, Eddie Murphy, Chris Pine, Justin Timberlake, Sam Worthington. And two Brits: Henry Cavill, Michael Fassbender. Once 007’s Martin Campbell took over, he wanted Cooper and was greatly miffed when the suits signed Reynolds behind his back. The two guys never got on and the film flopped.
  6. Patrick Warburton, Mr Peabody & Sherman, 2013.  Fillon, Jamie Bamber, Dominic Purcell and Karl Urban were heard to voice King Agamemnon. Since Mr P is a most  amazing time-travelling dog, he also got to meet such other  historical figures as Beethoven, Buill Clinton, Leonardo De Vinci, Gandhi, Abraham Lincoln, the baby Moses, Shakespeare, Spartacus, George Washington, the Wright brotherts… and Mel Brooks voicing Einstein.
