Hughs then died in 2009 (at just 59) while penning a dark comedy version for Kirstin Dunst, Patrick Fugit as Sam and Patrick –  and Shia LaBeouf as the high school outsider Charlie.  The novelist took over and did it well. “No one who loves the book will complain about the movie,” said Chicago critic Roger Ebert., “and especially not about its near-ideal casting.” Including Miller as Patrick, Logan Lerman as Charlie and Harry Potter’s Emma Watson as her first American, Sam.
