Pearl Bailey

  1. Juanita Moore, Imitation of Life, 1958.   Pearly Mae and Ethel Waters topped the lists for Annie Johnson in 1956 when producer Ross Hunter planned a musical re-make of the 1933 wee pie.  Tittle perfectly summed up the movies of the director, Douglas Sirk.
  2. Juanita Moore. The Singing Nun, 1965.     Three of Hollywood’s then rare black female stars – Bailey, Dorothy Dandridge and Star Trek’s Nichelle Nichols – were in the wimple mix for Sister Mary in the typically Hollywood-mawkish version of the life of the Belgian nun-cum-pop star. Just not about her death – suicide while the balance of her life was disturbed.
