Philip Merivale

  1. Herbert Marshall, The Solitaire Man, 1932.      And the titular guy was, of course, a famous jewel thief. Bot one about to retired and get wed when… One of Merivale’s wives was the actress Gladys Cooper – his actor son, John, was Vivien Leigh’s lover after her divorce from Laurence Olivier.
  2. Cecil Humphreys, The Razor’s Edge, 1946.      An earlier choice – more by the original director George Cukor than Head Fox Darryl F Zanuck and eventual helmer Edmund Goulding – for the Holy Man in the W Somerset Maugham classic.  Final casting was delayed until the film’s star, Tyrone Power, completed his WWII  military service in January 1946.   Merivale was dead in March.
  3. HB Warner, It’s a Wonderful Life, 1946.
