1. – Raimu, La femme de boulanger/The Baker’s Wife, France,1938. Once playwright-realisateur Marcel Pagnol fell in love with the Jean Giono story of the old baker and his much younger wife, he knew the boulanger must be Raimu. In case, “le plus grand acteur du monde” considered the role too small, Pagnol pursued other choices, including his future Ugolin in Manon des sources, 1953   –   nicknamed Brioche   because he had been an apprentice baker.
