Machiko Kyô,  The  Teahouse  of  the  August  Moon, 1956.   Desperation set in at Warners after losing Audrey Hepburn as Lotus Blossom.  Until the Osaka-born Kyô showed up with excellent English, the stage-screen director Joshua Logan had decided on Japan’s Judy Garland… Known at home for Akira Kurosawa’s Scandal, 1950, and internationally  opposite Roberts Ryan and Stack in Sam Fuller’s House of Bamboo, 1954,  Shirley  became a politician in 1974. She was elected several times to the upper house  of Japan’s parliament… and had a Tokyo stage musical made about her life.
