Sigrid Gurie

  1. Joan Bennett, The Man in the Iron Mask, 1939.     Variety reported that Gurie and Frances Dee tested for the Dumas heroine, Maria Theresa, opposite the titular Louis Heyward – in a change of pace for Frankenstein  director James Whale. (Ironically,  his cast included the debut of Peter Cushing, Hammer’s Professor Frankenstein six times during 1956-1973).
  2. Linda Darnell, Blood and Sand, 1940.      Producer Sam Goldwyn’s  “Norwegian Garbo” tested for Carmen, ever-loving wife of Tyrone Power’s poor matador in the re-hash of Rudolph Valentino’s 1921 silent classic. Gurie casued a scandal later in the 40s, when the media discovered she was born not in Norway but… Brooklyn!
