Stephen Baldwin

  1. John C Reilly, Casualities of War, 1989.    Having completed his bit part, Reillyhad flown home, only to be called back literally as he got off the plane in Chicago by De Palma – to replace the sacked Baldwin. Stevie B, as he refers to himself, isstill (of course) seen in some early scenes.
  2. Keanu Reeves, Speed, 1993.   Big mistake by the youngest of the Baldwin bros. He was director Jan de Bont’s first choice for the hero of Bus 2525 – the one with a bomb aboard! No,said Baldwin, Jack Traven was too close to the Die Hard hero John McClane.(Well, of course, he was!). Reeves said much the same, but loved the re-write and the actioner madehima(surprise) star.  There were 30 stars queuing for Die Hard On A Bus. From A Listers Jeff Bridges, Kevin Costner, Tom Cruise, Michael Douglas, Harrison Ford, Richard Gere, Mel Gibson, Tom Hanks, Kurt Russell, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Patrick Swayze, even Mr Die Hard, himself, Bruce Willis… to the B group: Kevin Bacon, three Baldwin brothers (Alec, Stephen and William), Michael Biehn, Bruce Campbell, George Clooney, Johnny Depp, Richard Dreyfuss, Michael Keaton, Christophe(r) Lambert, Viggo Mortensen, Dennis Quaid, Mickey Rourke, Tom Selleck… and two also-rans Bruce Campbell and Chuck Norris. All crushed by a whippersnapper!
  3. John Pankow, The Object Of My Affection, 1997.    The 90s’ eternal triangleof a girl and two guys (a gay and a straight), changed from Uma Thurman, Keanu Reeves and Baldwin, to Aniston, Paul Rudd and the Mad About You TV star Pankow…when Baldwin was replaced after a day. Again.  His elder brother, William, had been in the Affection mix with Aniston the previous year.
  4. Ben Torgersen, Thunderbirds, 2004.    Due as Thunderbird 4 pilot Gordon Tracy, born 2043, named after NASAstronaut Gordon Cooper. With his freres as the three other Tracys from the 1965-1966 sf puppetseries.Warners convenientlyforgetting there wasfifth bro – Alan.
