Teddy Rooney

  1. Dennis Holmes, Hound-Dog Man, 1959.   As the leading hunk changed from Robert Mitchum to Lindsay Crosby (Bing’s fourth son, a suicide like the third, Dennis) to Stuart Whitman,  so did the sprat named Spud  – to Holmes from Mickey Rooney’s  son.  The Rooneys co-starred inAndy Hardy Comes Home, 1957. Teddy was what else but Andy Hardy Jr.
  2. Harve Presnell, When the Boys Meet the Girls,1965.  George Hamilton was a silly idea for heading MGM’s second version (obviously first aimed at Elvis) of the Gershwin brothers’  30s musical, Girl Crazy –. the first in, ’42,  had Mickey and Judy doing-the-show-right-here. One suit pointed out that George was no singing terpsichorean, another suggested using the kids.  Whose?  Judy Garland’s daughter, Liza Minnelli, 19, and a Mickey Rooney son. Which one? Any one! Three were available: Teddy, 15; Mickey Jnr, 19; Tim, 20. They played 41 mainly TV roles between them during 1957-1984.   Producer Sam Katzman preferred crooner Jack Jones. (So did Brityish actress Susan George!). And his Camelot  tour opened the door to Presnell.
