Walter Catlett

  1. Nigel Bruce, Roxie Hart, 1941. For the musical based on real Chicago murder trials – Roxie and Velma were inspired by Beulah Annan and Belva Gaertner – Catlett was booked for E. Clay Benham. Then, as Fox politely put it, “the character has now been changed and we are going to use another man.” Working titles included Chicago – used for Rob Marshall’s vigorous 2001 rendition. The ’41 version was dedicated to “all the beautiful women in the world who have shot their men full of holes out of pique.”
  2. Frank Faylen, It’s a Wonderful Life, 1946
