However,   the UK government refused to to let him leave after he  resigned from the RAF to appear in the picture  – during WWII!  The perfect Crisp won the support Oscar. As the “stunning masterpiece” (New York Times) went on  to beat Citizen Kane to Best Film, the perfect Crisp won the support Oscar as John Ford collected the third (of four) unequalled directing Oscars.
