In Doc5 Peter Davison’s Cybermen encounter, circa 2526, Scott was offered to Burt, Colin Baker (to be Doc6 in 1984-1986), Nicholas Ball, Peter Firth, Del Henney, Martin Jarvis, Tim Pigott-Smith, Patrick Ryecart, Patrick Stewart, David Warner, Simon Williams. Plus Gareth Hunt (aka Mike Gambit) from TV’s 1976-1977 New Avengers. And the more successful 1977-1983 Professionals: Bodie and Doyle, aka Lewis Collins and Martin Shaw.
Keith Drinkel, Doctor Who # 122: Time Flight, TV, 1982. As many as 25 casting (or dart) board regulars were up for any (or all!) of three characters in Doc4 Peter Davison’s tale about a missing Concorde. Stephen Yardley, Doctor Who # 138: Vengeance on Varos, TV, 1984. Not quite matching the Lifeforce movie’s army of 203 candidates for 18 rules that year but as many as 58 guys were seen for just three roles in this Doc6 Colin Baker episode – most of them being Lifeforcers! (They did not share the same casting director, so how did Cannon get hold of the Whoverse lists?) For example there were 19 contenders for Arak… Burt, Yardley, Alun Armstrong, Nicholas Ball, Jim Broadbent, Tony Caunter, Tom Chadbon, Peter Childs, Kenneth Cope, Paul Darrow, Tom Georgeson, John Hallam, Brian Miller, Tony Osoba, Edward Peel, Carl Rigg, Colin Scully, Donald Sumpter, Dave Warwick. Of course, Who was science fiction,while Lifeforce was science fart.
Paul Darrow, Doctor Who #141: Timelash, TV, 1985. Burt, Darrow, Steven Berkoff, Tom Chadbon, Michael Gothard, Ronald Lacey, Patrick Mower and David Warner were in the frame for Tekker opposite Doc6 Colin Baker. The infamous 80s’ producer and sex abuser (of fans) John Nathan-Turner suggested Darrow play Tekker like his Blakes 7 character, Avon. Darrow had a loftier notion. Richard III.
Tom Chadbon, Doctor Who #143: The Trial of a Time Lord, TV, 1986. As the franchise was as much on trial as Doc6 Colin Baker in the season-long investigation, 16 actors were flagpoled for Merdeen… Burt, Tom Adams, Keith Barron, Brian Blessed, Hywel Bennett, Kenneth Colley, Peter Gilmore, Michael Gothard, Gareth Hunt, Paul Jerricho, Clive Merrison, Paul Shelley, Anthony Valentine, David Warner, James Warwick. Burt played Valgard in #126: Terminus, 1983, opposite Doc5 Peter Davison.

CHAMPION'S LEAGUE

The battle for the top spot between Marlon Brando and Jack Nicholson has – I think – come to an end. Recently, we‘ve seen Marlon leading Jack by one or two movies – and then, almost immediately, vice-versa. The gap is much wider now between the former Mulholland Drive neighbours. Latest research dug up more titles for Jack - Mr Mom, A Christmas Story, Striptease, The Bicentennial Man, Expend4bles – so that he is now safe (?) at the top of league with 177 films he chose not to make compared to Brando’s 172. But you know - you never know…

A BOND MISS

Is Léa Seydoux now a spy…or, to be more polite, a talent scout for Eon Productions? 007’s girl in both Spectre and No Time to Die appears to assisting the (rather quiet) search for the next Jimbo. In La bête (The Beast), one of her many new French films, Léa co-stars with Hammersmith’s George MacKay - Sam Mendes’ find for 1917. He learned French for the film, so this may not be his last Paris booking.

As Gabrielle and Louis, they work extremely well together as star-crossed lovers in three time-lines: 1904, 1914 and 2044. And he looks the business in his retro tuxedo. ‘Twould be fascinating to cast an eye over her report for Barbara Broccoli’s eyes only. On verra as Léa (and now even George) would say. We’ll see.

This is such a busy year for movies that various releases have been postponed until 2025… Captain America: Brave New World, Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17, Games of Thrones spin-off The Hedge Knight (not about a gardener), Ke Huy Quan’s actioner With Love, John Wick’s spin-off, Ballerina, Fast X :part 2, Avatar 3, Jurassic World 4, Black Mirror 7, Mission: Impossible 8, Fantastic Four, Superman and the dreaded Michael bio – more like horror film, surely. Oh and no The Batman 2 or Harry P TV series until 2026.
