Bob Crane

  1. George Maharis, Crash, TV, 1978.   A fairly accurate version of the 1972 crash of Flight 401 in the Florida Everglades killing 103 people was marred by another true story – the murder (still unsolved) of Crane. Known for creating sex-tapes (his own sex-tapes) long before they became a Hollywood fashion, the Hogan’s Heroes TV star was literally killed with his taping equipment: bludgeoned to death with his video camera’s tripod, with the camera cable wrapped around his neck postmortem. Another ex-chat show host, Greg Kinnear, played Crane in Paul Schrader’s biopic, Auto-Focus, 2002.  He wore the real Hogan’s leather jacket – first worn by Frank Sinatra in Von Ryan’s Express in 1964.
