Damde Joanna Lumley

  1. Elga Andersen, Le Mans, 1971.     “The director talked to me politely about the film: Miss Lumley, are you vulnerable?  This girl  is very vulnerable.” Then he asked her to stand next to Steve McQueen. “I towered over him. This was a disappointment to me.  He was not a small man but he couldn’t  beat 5ft 8ins and high heels.”
  2. Barbara Kellerman, Game For Vultures, 1979.    Shows the paucity of British roles when three actresses – Joan Collins. Kellerman, Lumley – were vying for the same role, so nothing  it could have been phoned in.
  3. Sheila Ruskin, Doctor Who #114:The Keeper of the Traken, TV, 1981.    She declined the elderly Keeper’s wife Kassia in good company: Francesca Annis, Glenda Jackson, Helen Mirren, Fiona Walker and fellow Avenger Diana Rigg! They all decided against visiting the Traken Union empire of peace and harmony, with Doc4 Tom Baker.Loved as the “shampoo” guzzling ex-model Patsy Stone in Absolutely Fabulous,Lumley’s screen gigs can best be summed up by one of her TV show titles: Posh Nosh. (Which, as it happens, co-starred… Doc10, David Tennant).
  4. Rula Lenska, Doctor Who #133: Resurrection of the Daleks, TV, 1984.     Fourteen ladies, including four Bond Girls (Lumley, Honor Blackman, Jenny Hanley, Pamela Salem) and future M Judi Dench were in the melting pot for Dr Styles. Also listed: Polly Adams, Eleanor Bron, Rachel Davies, Diane Keen, Maureen Lipman, Kate O’Mara, Jacqueline Pearce, Sheila Ruskin, Fiona Walker and Penelope Wilton. Despite more than a hundred screen roles, lively Lumley never met The Doctor… just Dr Willoughby, a 1999 ITV series about a medical soap.
  5. Tracy-Ann Oberman, EastEnders, TV, 2004-05.     Seen (with Cheryl Baker and Patsy Kensit) for Chrissie Watts, the manipulative wife of the Vic’s pub landlord, Dirty Den. She killed him in the 20th anniversary episode of the iconic BBC soap. Lumley had an Absolutely Fabulous life – and triumph – as Patsy Stone, aka Eurydice Colette Clytemnestra Dido Bathsheba Rabelais Patricia Cocteau Stone.
