Doris Dowling

  1.  June Haver, The Dolly Sisters, 1944.     Alice Faye refused to play sisters again with her Fox rival Betty Grable (after Tin Pan Alley, 1939) and quit the studio! Grable was pregnant and an impatient studio actually thought of replacing its new box-office queen in the fictional biopic of Yansci and Roszika Deutch, going from Budapest to the Ziegfeld Follies, as Jenny and Rosie Dolly – played by real sisters, indeed twins, Constance and Doris Dowling.   (Betty Grable played Jenny). A semi-sequel plan for Grable and Rita Hayworth as The Duncan Sisters died when Columbia refused to loan Rita.
  2. Claire Kelly, Party Girl, 1958.   Doris, the American girl from Italy’s 1949 sensation, Bitter Rice, missed Nichols Ray’s last major  Hollywood filmThey must have craved Cyd Charisse’s better and titular role, but Dowling and Angie Dickinson found themselves in the same frame for the wife of crippled Robert Taylor – consigliere for mobster Lee J Cobb. In his final MGMovie, Taylor’s performance is probably his finest – and Cobb’s seems like  a first draft for Robert De Niro (and hs pool cue) in The Untouchables… 30 years later.
