Douglas McPhail

  1. Carl Esmond, Seven Sweethearts, 1942.  Van Heflin reports on a tulip festival in a tiny slice of Holland in the US countryside and  meets seven sisters: Albert, Billie, Cornelius, George, Peter, Reggie, Victor (Dad wanted sons) and their rule that none can marry until the first-born does.  McPhail and his wife, Betty Jaynes, were MGM’s first reserves for Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald. But fluffy operettas were finished, and the McPhails divorced.
