French auteur Luc Besson’s classic was inspired by the exploits of two deep-sea diving champions: Maiorca and Jacques Mayol (played by Jean Reno and Jean-Marc Barr) However, Besson could not persuade Maiorca to play not his own fathjer but that of Jacques. So Besson cast his own father. This would hjave been even mnore suitable when Luc had considered playing Jaques, himself. Well, he was also a deep-sea diver – which is the how and why of the film in the first place.
