Eric Fleming

  1. John Derek, The Ten Commandments, 1954.
  2. Clint Eastwood, Per un pugno di dollari/For A Fistful of Dollars, Italy-Germany-Spain, 1964. Italian director Sergio Leone’s first choice for his Dollars trilogy was Henry Fonda. He passed. So did James Coburn, then Charles Bronson. The fourth and fifth choices, Steve Reeves and Richard Harrison told Leone to look at the TV oater, Rawhide. He did and tried to sign the star but Fleming also passed and suggested his young co-star… who turned up for shooting in his Rawhide boots, black jeans (and cigars he cut into three) from LA stores. Fleming drowned… while making a TV two-parter, High Jungle, in Peru’s river Huallaga five months before Clint’s Euro-smash opened in the US.
