Sounds implausible but Italy’s enfant terrible (auteur-painter–poet-writer-Marxist and the most religous of atheists), Pier Paolo Pasolini, planned a version of Geppeto & Son in the late 60s, starring Totò, as Geppetto and PPPs lover (from age 15-24) Ninetto Davoli as the wooden lad. Plus Valeri as The Fox (and her husband, Vittorio Caprioli as The Cat). Totò’s death in 1967, ended the project and it was another 35 years before another Italian comic, Roberto Benigni, considered a new version – and made the flop of his life!
