Hulk Hogan

  1. Christophe(r) Lambert, Highlander, 1985.   Once Sean Connery refused the lead (for the splashier role of the 2,000-year-old Ramirez), finding the titular and immortal Connor MacLeod was not easy.  Kurt Russell actually won the role but his lover, Goldie Hawn, insisted he stay home; he dealt with Big Trouble in Little China, instead. So you can imagine the anguish of the six producers when, after also being turned down by Kevin Costner, Michael Douglas, Mel Gibson, Scott Glenn, Ed Harris, William Hurt, David Keith, Mickey Rourke, Sam Shepard, top choice Marc Singer, Sting (also asked for a song!), Patrick Swayze and Peter Weller… that they discovered that Australian director Russell Mulcahy’s French choice of the new Tarzan, Christophe(r) Lambert, could hardly speak English.  He learned. In six weeks.  Most of these names are known to the fans Hogan is a surprise contender. He insisted that his wrestling career was far more important at the time.  He’d made three  movies by then, including Rocky III.  He look old enough but passed on the guy trying to keep a straight face when saying:  “I am Connor MacLeod of the Clan MacLeod. I was born in 1518 in the village of Glenfinnan on the shores of Loch Shiel. And I am immortal.”
  2. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Twins, 1988.    Schwarzi and Danny De Vito  had a choice – Twins or Suburban Commando. They twinned. Hogan and Christopher Lloyd commandoed.
  3. Eric Allan Kramer, Men in Tights, 1992.   Mel Brooks asked the wrestling superstar to be Little John. Hogan didn’t appear to get the joke.
  4. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Batman & Robin, 1996.
