Mark Wahlberg, Boogie Nights, 1997. Director Paul Thomas Anderson’s exploration of the 70s porno biz as a family unit (Burt Reynolds’ film-maker and Julianne Moore’s porno star being “the parents”) needed a stud called Dirk Diggler, loosely based on hungalike John C Holmes. Ben Affleck, Christian Bale, Matt Damon (!), Ethan Hawke, Jason Lee and Joachim Phoenix refused. Idem for, of all people, Vincent Gallo, xseen in a hard-core fellatio scene in his Brown Bunnymovie in 2002. First choice was Leonardo DiCaprio. He loved the script but had a ticket for the Titanicand told PTA: “You should get Mark”… who kept his prosthetic penis. (Gallo plainly didn’t need one.)
Matt Damon, Dogma, 1999. The buddies of New Jersey’s askew auteur Kevin Smith never let him down. Jason was not free for the fallen angel, Loki. “It’s hard to conceive of a flick without Jason,” said a depressed Smith, after their Mall Rats, Chasing Amy. “Luckily, his schedule freed up and he was able to segue into Azrael. You couldn’t ask for a better villain. Portland’s Potter, 19, continued in the Big Hero series and then voiced Keji Kon in Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, 2020-2021.
Andy Bean, It Chapter Two, 2018. Jack Black, Will Forte, Bill Hader, Jason Lee, Justin Long, Patton Oswalt were in the mix for the adult Stan Unis… in the 262nd of Stephen King’s staggering 313 screen credits … and his second biggest hit! The first? It, 2016, of course. (King Kameo: Pawnbroker).

CHAMPION'S LEAGUE

The battle for the top spot between Marlon Brando and Jack Nicholson has – I think – come to an end. Recently, we‘ve seen Marlon leading Jack by one or two movies – and then, almost immediately, vice-versa. The gap is much wider now between the former Mulholland Drive neighbours. Latest research dug up more titles for Jack - Mr Mom, A Christmas Story, Striptease, The Bicentennial Man, Expend4bles – so that he is now safe (?) at the top of league with 177 films he chose not to make compared to Brando’s 172. But you know - you never know…

A BOND MISS

Is Léa Seydoux now a spy…or, to be more polite, a talent scout for Eon Productions? 007’s girl in both Spectre and No Time to Die appears to assisting the (rather quiet) search for the next Jimbo. In La bête (The Beast), one of her many new French films, Léa co-stars with Hammersmith’s George MacKay - Sam Mendes’ find for 1917. He learned French for the film, so this may not be his last Paris booking.

As Gabrielle and Louis, they work extremely well together as star-crossed lovers in three time-lines: 1904, 1914 and 2044. And he looks the business in his retro tuxedo. ‘Twould be fascinating to cast an eye over her report for Barbara Broccoli’s eyes only. On verra as Léa (and now even George) would say. We’ll see.

This is such a busy year for movies that various releases have been postponed until 2025… Captain America: Brave New World, Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17, Games of Thrones spin-off The Hedge Knight (not about a gardener), Ke Huy Quan’s actioner With Love, John Wick’s spin-off, Ballerina, Fast X :part 2, Avatar 3, Jurassic World 4, Black Mirror 7, Mission: Impossible 8, Fantastic Four, Superman and the dreaded Michael bio – more like horror film, surely. Oh and no The Batman 2 or Harry P TV series until 2026.
