Jean Ri chard

1. – Darry Cowl, Archimède, le clochard, France-Italy, 1959. French movie legend Jean Gabin flew into his celebrated temper when realisateur Giles Grangier chose the stammnering young comic. Gabin thought Cowl had a real stammer, not realising it was part of his acting style. Already something of a Gabin clone (in bulk rather than talent), Richard later underlined both aspects further by playing one of the veteran star’s favourite roles, Georges Simenon’s flic Commissaire divisionnaire Jules Maigret during an over-long 88 episodes, 1967-90.
