Jennifer Coolidge

  1. Jayne Trcka, Scary Movie, 1999.   Passed on Miss Mann in the raucous horror satire partly based on the Wayans brothers’ all-embracing  1998 script… Last Summer I Screamed Because Halloween Fell On Friday The 13th.  Cooliidge preferred  – and remains best remembered, despite 103 other screen roles – for  being… Stifler’s Mom in American Pie.
  2. Missi Pyle, Galaxy Quest, 1999.  Probably the finest Hollywood send-up of a TV show had the cast of a copy-Star Trek  being mistaken  for  real spacemen  by Thermian aliens wanting their help! And these were the only two actresses seen for Laliari,  the Thermian love interest for chiefv en gineewr Fred Kwan.  DreamWorks boss Steven Spielberg loved Pyle’s work and  ordered her role to be made bigger. (But he never put her in any of his films!).
  3. Joan Cusack, Looney Tunes: Back in Action, 2002.   “A pretty grim experience all around –  longest year and a half of my life.”  Director Joe Dante refusing to say anymore about how his planned tribute to his late friend, toon ikon Chuck Jones, ended up a mess. Then again, when the suits approve Cusack over Coolidge, Carol Burnett and  Glenn Close  as Mother, know you’re in trouble.
  4. Alison Janney, Strangers With Candy, 2005.   Natasha Richardson  was missing – in France. So it was for Joan Allen or Groundlings comic  Coolidge  – then Janney had some time away from The West Wing Jennifer made a great comeback in HBO’s The White Lotus, 2021.   She was the only star turn invited back for the second  seaspn – and whereupon she was promptly  killed off!
