June Duprez

  1. Ingrid Bergman,  Gaslight, 1943.    The captivating Duprez was discovered by London producer Alexander Korda for such Brit films as The Four Feathers and  The Thief of Bagdad.  He took her to Hollywood – and ruined her career by wanting  to charge way too much for such  a complete unknown. Among the  roles she consequently lost – Nancy in George Cukor;s Gaslight  became not only the Hollywood debut but the actual acting debut of Angela Lansbury,  “an English refugee girl of 17 [with] great promise as an actress,” reported Hedda Hopper. She wuz right! By chance, I am writing this a few days after Lansbury won her first Olivier Award in London as Best Supporting Actress of 2014… at age 89.
