Lilian Harvey

  1. Alice Faye, George White’s Scandals, 1933.   The London-born musical star of German’s UFA combine tried her hand in Hollywood. She won an immediate deal with Fox. But walked out of this musicaL(and, eventually, her contract) because the “lead role” proved somewhat secondary. Also booked for a spot in in the movie were singer Rudy Vallee and His Connecticut Yankees group. He suggested his girl singer take over Harvey’s role. Alice Faye was 18 – and Fox’s new queen was born! (Until dethroned in her turn by Betty Grable in 1945). Harvey returned to Germany, finding Hitler in charge and Goebbels running the propaganda and movie machines. She helped various Jewish friends escape Nazi tyranny and followed them.  During most of WWII, she was a volunteer  nurse in LA.
