Maurice Murphy

  1. Clark Williams, Tailspin Tommy in the Great Air Mystery, 1935.    Change of Tommy Tompkins in the second serial.  Chipper or not, Williams was less boyish than  Murphy but then Tommy was supposed to have matured  here… more so, apparently, than young Murphy. Williams had the shorter career, seven roles in 15 years to Murphy’s 56  in 22. And Noah Beery Jr stole the show from both of them.
  2. Richard Cromwell, Jezebel, 1937. The Warner Bros Daily Production and Progress Reports confirm that the teenagers Tim Holt and  Murphy tested for the role of Henry Fonda’s brother opposite the titular Bette Davis in  the film known  as…  the black-and-white Gone with the Wind!  Jezebel was released on March 26, 1938 – the day I was busy being born.
