Nicholas Hoult

  1. Andrew Simpson, Notes On A Scandal, 2005.    After several call-back auditions, Hoult was eventually passed over for the teenage lover of his school’s art teacher, Cate Blanchett –  caught in mid-fellatio, by fellow teacher Judi Dench. Jack O’Connell had also tested.  At least, they knew what was happening.  Jason Reitman loved the scenario and phoned the producers to offer his directing services. “We’re in editing right now, but I hope you’ll like the film when it comes out”!  And Hoult was soon going from Clash of the Titans and  X-Men: First Class to Jack The Giant Killer and the fourth Mad Max.
  2. Miles Teller, The Spectacular Now, 2012.      Also in the mix for  Sutter in what #1 US critic, Roger Ebert, said in one of his, alas, final reviews, was  “a lovely film about two high school seniors who look, speak and feel like real 18-year-old middle-American human beings. Do you have any idea how rare that is.”
  3. Jai Courtney, Terminator: Genesis, 2014.     Terminator starts over… During November 2013, Hoult and Garrett Hedlund refused to test for Kyle Reese. The suits simply switched to lesser egos… and looked over Courtney, Wilson Bethel, Boyd Holbrook, Taylor Kitsch, Sam Reid.
  4. Eddie Redmayne, Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, 2015.  Hoult and Matt Smith were listed for JK Rowling’s new hero, wizard-magizoologist Newton Artemis Fido ‘Newt’Scamanderbefore Redmayne became the the sole target. Well, he was the latest Best Actor Oscar-winner (for The Theory of Everything, 2013).  He signed on and heloped cast the trilogy in five parts(!). No prequel or sequel to her Harry Potter creation, said Rowling, but an extension of the wizarding world, starting in 1926 New York – 65 years before Harry reads Scamander’s 1927 book at Hogwarts.
  5. Taron Egerton, Robin Hood: Origins, 2016.  Not the catchiest of titles – compared to Nottingham & Hoodor just plain Hood– but Leonardo Di Caprio’s production beat the rivals to the off.  Hoult, Dylan O’Brian and Jacks Huston and Reynor were also up for director Otto (Peaky Blinders) Bathurst’s Sherwood…  A major flop !   “I don’t regret it,” said Egerton. “The pitch was genuinely interesting… sounded like a legitimate, gritty reimagining of something that’s always been dealt with in a flowery, glossy way.” Egerton and Hoult pump their iron at the same London gym as Spider-ManTom, Holland and Kit Harrington.
  6. Jason Segel, The Discovery, 2016.  Hoult passed to Segel  the guilt for a million suicides since  he and his father, Robert Redford, proved the afterflife.  Second feature film from LA  auteur Charlie McDowell, son of Malcolm and Mary Steenburgen (she was also in the cast with his then lover Rooney Mara).
  7. Ben Schnetzer, The Death & Life of John F Donovan, Canada-UK, 2016.  This is the film that Hoult quit the above Discovery for – and then left it, For his fiirst English-lingo movie, Quebecois wunderkind Xavier Dolan stuck to his usual wares, said Hollywood Reporter’s Stephen Dalton.  Mommy issues. Homophobia. Sexuality.
  8. Miles Teller, Top Gun: Gun: Maverick, 2018.    The tree guys up for the son of Anthony Edwards’ Goose  were flown to Tom Cruise’s house for “chemistry tests.” Tom voted for Teller over Hoult and Glen Powell.  Tom later Insisted that the role of a trainee pilot known as Hangman should be beefed up or the similarly beefed-up Powell. Due to the Covid 19 pandemic, the release was delayed until 2021.
  9. Esai Morales, Mission: Impossible, 2020. The various delays caused  by the Covid 19 pandemic, meant thatHoult  had to quitbeui bg the villain of  the Tom Cruise franchiser – and report back for duty  for the  second season of Hulu’s The Great.  He had been loving the  M:I training. “Tom is a complete movie star and someone who’s so dedicated and hardworking, and wants the best from everyone around him,” Hoult said. “And those are films that I grew up on… when I was a kid and just been blown away by the filmmaking. So it’s exciting.”  Or was.
