Richard Bohringer

  1. Georges Poulouly, Ascenseur pour l’echafaud (UK: Lift to the Scaffold; US: Frantic), France, 1957.    For the punk killer in his first feature, new French realisateur Louis Malle looked over the similarly new young turks – Jean-Paul Belmondo, Sami Frey ,Larent Terzieff. However, when shooting started on September 23, it was with the ex-child star of René Clément’s 1951 classic, Jeux interdits/Forbidden Games. Like having Shirley Temple play Lizzie Borden.
  2. Claude Brasseur, Une histoire simple (US: A Simple Story), France,1978.   Genial realisateur Claude Sautet was not impressed. Out of  films  for almost eight years after Charles Matton’s L’Italien des roses, Bohringer had become a singing poet maudit in Saint-Germain-des-Prés. Three years later, Gorodish in Jean-Jacques Beineix’s Diva was his comeback  – due  to Euro-casting legend Dominique Besnehard.
  3. Eddy Mitchell, Coup de Torchon, France, 1981.    For his directing debut, Alain Corneau wrote it with author Jim Thompson  – “who scripted all day (on Jack Daniels)  and went out to  his woman at night.”
  4. Roland Blanche, Le 4eme pouvoir, France 1984.     Not that powerful.
  5. Richard Berry,  Suivez mon regard,  France, 1986.     Too busy for scenarist Jean Curtelin’s directing debut.
  6. Jean-Francois Stevenin, Lune Froide, France 1991.    Actor Patrick Bouchitey made  his directing  debut  with  a  short  based on a Charles Bukowski tale of two tramps screwing a dead girl – and used it as the flashback finale when extending it to feature length for producer Luc Besson.  Bohringer pulled out of the short two months before shooting.
  7. Tolsty, Le Brasier, France, 1991.    A literal mining disaster!
  8. Gérard Desarthe, Uranus, 1991.    Too many star turns: Michel Blanc, Gérard Depardieu, Fabrice Luchini, Jean-Pierre Marielle, Philippe Noiret,  Daniel Prevost.
  9. Jean-Pierre Mocky, Le Mari de Leon, France, 1992.    After two previous Mocky experiences, Bohringer left the lead to the director, himself – as a director beset by a  gang of varying sexual proclivities.
