Robert Powell

  1. Ian McShane, Jesus of Nazareth, TV, 1977.       Italian stage-screen director Franco Zeffirelli saw Powell as Judas. When both Dustin Hoffman and Al Pacino bypassed  the title role, legend insists that Zeffirelli looked again at Powell and cried: “Jesus!”  “You know,” said an assistant, “you’re right”
  2. Jon Finch, The Martian Chronicles, TV, 1980.       Even the book’s author and co-scenarist, Ray Bradbury, thought the mini-series was “Booooooooring!” Rather obviously, the 1977 TV-Jesus of Nazareth was invited to play… Christ. Or rather a scene where a shapeshifting Martian appears) as Christ.  Rather obviously, he declined. He did, though, play Gabriele D’Annunzio Dr Victor Frankenstein, Richard Hannay, Professor Henry Higgins (Twiggy was his 1981  Eliza), Jude The Obscure, Boris Pasternak, Charles Stewart Rolls, Romeo, Percy Bysshe Shelley,…  and a male nurse in the BBC medical soap, Holby City, for 184 episodes,  2005-2009.
  3. Patrick Stewart, Lifeforce, 1984.
  4. Michael Gothard, Lifeforce, 1984.
  5. Nicholas Ball, Lifeforce, 1984.
  6. Peter Firth, Lifeforce, 1984.
