Sam Spiegel

  1. John von Kotze, The African Queen, 1951.     The producer agreed to play the walk-on role of a German officer until realising his scenarist-director John Huston wanted him to shave his head.   Cameraman Jack Cardiff’s assistant was used, instead.
  2. Jerzy  Kosinksi, Reds,  1980.      Warren Beatty, a Sam Spiegel pal and often guest on  his yacht – he started writing Shamoo on it – wanted Sam to play the Bolshevik flunky, Grigory Zinoviev. “I think Sam got a tuxedo made for the occasion,”  said Beatty.  “But it never happened.”
