Michael Cochrane, Doctor Who #120: Black Orchid, TV, 1982. Not a rehash of Sophia Loren’s 1958 Hollywood melo, but an aventure (with cricket!) in 1925 England for for Doc5 Peter Davison. In the baker’sd dozen list for Lord Cranleigh were Cochrane, Nicholas Ball, Michael Cashman, Christopher Cazenove, Keith Drinkel, Peter Firth, Nigel Havers, Paul Jerricho, Martin Potter, Jeff Rawle, Patrick Ryecart, James Warwick – and Simon Williams, invariably a lord or knight.

In Doc5 Peter Davison’s Cybermen encounter, circa 2526, Scott was offered to Williams, Colin Baker (to be Doc6 in 1984-1986), Nicholas Ball, Andrew Burt, Lewis Collins, Peter Firth, Del Henney, Martin Jarvis, Tim Pigott-Smith, Patrick Ryecart, Patrick Stewart, David Warner. Plus Gareth Hunt (aka Mike Gambit) from TV’s 1976-1977 New Avengers. And the more successful 1977-1983 Professionals: Bodie and Doyle, aka Lewis Collins and Martin Shaw,
Martin Potter, Doctor Who #126: Terminus, TV, 1983. Director Mary Ridge had as many as 16 Eirak choices for Doc 5 Peter Davison’s visit to the titular and leprous space station. Many of the usual suspects – Williams, Potter, Nicholas Ball, Ralph Bates, Christopher Cazenove, Tom Chadbon, Ben Cross, Richard Heffer, avdrts, Martin Jarvis, Jeff Rawle, Patrick Ryecart and Simons Ward. Plus Sean Arnold, Jack Galloway, Nigel Havers, Paul Shelley.

Tom Adams, Doctor Who #130: Warriors of The Deep, 1984. Competing for Commander Vorshak in Doc5 Peter Davison’s finale were 13 of the astonishing army of 203 candidates for just 18 roles in that year’s Lifeforce movie mess: Williams, Steven Berkoff, Kenneth Colley, Michael Craig, Paul Darrow, Anton Diffring, Del Henney, Martin Jarvis, Ian McCulloch, Patrick Mower, Patrick Stewart, David Warner and Peter Wyngarde. Plus three outsiders: Brian Blessed, Peter Gilmore, Gareth Hunt. The difference being Who was science fiction and Lifeforce was science fart. Williams was Dr Cartwright in the 25th anniversary season opener #148: Remembrance of the Daleks, 1998, with Doc7 Sylvester McCoy back in… 1963!

CHAMPION'S LEAGUE

The battle for the top spot between Marlon Brando and Jack Nicholson has – I think – come to an end. Recently, we‘ve seen Marlon leading Jack by one or two movies – and then, almost immediately, vice-versa. The gap is much wider now between the former Mulholland Drive neighbours. Latest research dug up more titles for Jack - Mr Mom, A Christmas Story, Striptease, The Bicentennial Man, Expend4bles – so that he is now safe (?) at the top of league with 177 films he chose not to make compared to Brando’s 172. But you know - you never know…

A BOND MISS

Is Léa Seydoux now a spy…or, to be more polite, a talent scout for Eon Productions? 007’s girl in both Spectre and No Time to Die appears to assisting the (rather quiet) search for the next Jimbo. In La bête (The Beast), one of her many new French films, Léa co-stars with Hammersmith’s George MacKay - Sam Mendes’ find for 1917. He learned French for the film, so this may not be his last Paris booking.

As Gabrielle and Louis, they work extremely well together as star-crossed lovers in three time-lines: 1904, 1914 and 2044. And he looks the business in his retro tuxedo. ‘Twould be fascinating to cast an eye over her report for Barbara Broccoli’s eyes only. On verra as Léa (and now even George) would say. We’ll see.

This is such a busy year for movies that various releases have been postponed until 2025… Captain America: Brave New World, Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17, Games of Thrones spin-off The Hedge Knight (not about a gardener), Ke Huy Quan’s actioner With Love, John Wick’s spin-off, Ballerina, Fast X :part 2, Avatar 3, Jurassic World 4, Black Mirror 7, Mission: Impossible 8, Fantastic Four, Superman and the dreaded Michael bio – more like horror film, surely. Oh and no The Batman 2 or Harry P TV series until 2026.
