Victoria Vetri

  1. Natalie Wood, West Side Story,   1961.     Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins (they won the first co-directing Oscars) saw many potential Big  Apple Romeo and Juilets – Tony and Maria. As many as 22 Marias, not one Puerto Rican among them:  Anna-Maria Alberghetti, Elizabeth Ashley, Diane Baker, Ina Balin,, Angie Dickinson, Jane Fonda, Valerie Harper (TV’s Rhoda, 1970-1978), Audrey Hepburn, Susan Kohner, Carol Lawrence, BarBara Luna, Suzanne Pleshette, Stephanie Powers, Jill St John, the Philippino Pilat Seurat, Elizabeth Taylor and Victoria Vetri (when billed as Angela Dorian). Plus two pairs of sisters: Italy’s Pier Angel and Marisa Pavan and Mexico’s Pilar and Pina Pellicer. Wood  won. She was perfect. She could even sing. And did so. But on-stage .Liz ruled herself out. Too busy. Too expensive. Too much.
  2. Sue Lyon, Lolita, 1960.
