Bernardo Bertolucci

  1. Fabio Testi, Il giardino dei Finzi Contini (US: The Garden of the Finzi-Continis), Italy,  1970.      For what proved his last great film (andy more than  a tad Bertoluccian), Vittorio De Sica  asked Rome’s fast-rising auteur to play Dominique Sanda’s lover.   At 29, he had no spare time, editing The Conformist, prepping The Spider’s Stratagem and a  certain Last Tango In Paris .  Sanda was his Conformist star and first Tango choice (until pregnant), both roles  requiring the sexual insolence of her Jewish Micol Finzi-Contini.  Discovered by her best friend (Lino Capolicchio) in bed with her  lover (Fabio Testi)…  she doesn’t care a jot, turning the light on and covering the naked Testi, not herself.
