Ginny Simms

  1. Pat Kirkwood, No Leave, No Love, 1945.        MGM was tough on ladies… Kirkwood was part of MGM’s post-war star-exchange system with the UK. She had super-groupies. Noel Coward wrote a song for her. Cole Porter told her “You may sing any song of mine at any time for the rest of your life.” The US public was not so smitten. The film’s flop and the stringent diet imnposed by the studio led to a breakdown, a suicide attempt, eight months in hospital… and losing Broadway’s Annie Get Your Gun. Simms lost the movie but gained the boss, becoming LB Mayer’s lover after hiss divorce. He tore up her Metro contract when she refused to marry him.  What a charmer!
