Giovanni Guareschi

1. – Gino Cervi, Le petit monde de Don Camillo/The Little World of Don Camillo, France-Italy, 1952.   The Italian classic’s author suggested himself for the role of the Communist Mayor Peppone opposite Fernandel’s feisty cleric.    He realised, after testing for   French realisateur Julian Duvivier, that acting was not quite him. His look, complete with Stalin moustache, lingered on – Cervi’s Peppone looked like Guareschi’s twin and remained in the role for five films – replaced by Lionel Stander when Cervi quite the sixth after Fernandel’s death.
