Karen Carpenter

  1. Kim Darby, True Grit, 1968.    John Wayne suggested the anorexicCarpenter after loving her  effervescence when he was judging a TV talent show.  Producer Hal B Wallis  wanted a name or an actress, not an unknown singer.   He looked over many possible Matties: Geneviève Bujold (who became Wallis’ Anne of the Thousand Days), Mia Farrow (who kicked herself for refusing), Sally Field, Jaclyn Smith, Tuesday Weld. Plus past and future Duke co-stars  Michele El Dorado Carey and Jennifer Rio Lobo Neill. And Duke’s teenage daughter Aissa – well, Mattie was supposed to be 14. Director Henry Hathaway was not satisfied with Darby. Karen’s only acting was in a Disco telepisode, 1975.
