Marilyn Manson

  1. Jeffrey Combs, House on Haunted Hill, 1999.      While Geoffrey Rush was chaneling Vincent Price (star of the original 1959 William Castle horror), Combs stole the show (in a way Manson could never have matched) as the evil Dr Richard Benjamin Vannacutt of the Vanacutt Psychiatric Institute for the Criminally Insane. Aha!
  2. Cillian Murphy, Batman Begins, 2004.
  3. Johnny Depp, Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, 2004.       The singer made it clear he wanted to be chocolatier Willy Wonka   but,… Director Tim Burton’s 30-strong wish list was… Ole Beetlejuice Michael Keaton, and Rowan Atkinson, Dan Aykroyd, Nicolas Cage, Jim Carrey, Chevy Chase, Warwick Davis, Robert De Niro, James Gandolfini, Dwayne Johnson, Marilyn Manson, Steve Martin, Rik, Bill Murray, Mike Myers, John Neville, Leslie Nielsen, Brad Pitt, Peter Sallis, Adam Sandler, Jerry Seinfeld, Will Smith, Patrick Stewart, Ben Stiller, Christopher Walken, Robin Williams. And the surviving Monty Python crew (also up for the 1970 version): John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, Michael Palin. Among the five exec producers, author Roald Dahl’s widow, Liccy, wanted her husband’s favourite Willy – Dustin Hoffman. If not possible she voted for UK comics, Eddie Izzard or David Walliams. She was quite happy with Depp… who said his Willy, as it were, was “part Howard Hughes-reclusive, part 1970s glamorous rock star.” No wonder Manson wanted it…
  4. Nicolas Buchoux, La Guerre des Miss, France, 2008.     Almost every interviewer made the same comment: Would have been funnier [in a comedy that wasn’t very] to have had a real rocker playing the Goth idol Angel Bundy. Yes, bien sur, said realisateur Patrice Leconte.  Exactly why he’d asked Marilyn Manson for the cameo. He was OK; his fee was not.
