Sharlene Spiteri

  1. Nicole Kidman, Moulin Rouge! 2001.     Leading man Ewan McGregor put in a good word – or three – for the lead singer of the Scottish band Texas (“I Don’t Want a Lover,” 1989).  Didn’t work.   Also turned down by  Australian writer-director Baz Luhrmann: Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Courtney Love, Natalie Jackson Mendoza, Renée Zellweger, Catherine  Zeta-Jones. “They didn’t have to be big singers,” Baz explained about his  needs, “but they had to be able to move you emotionally. Basically, Ewan [McGregor] and Nicole were the best for the job. That’s the bottom line of it.”
