Sir Elton John

  1. Bud Cort, Harold and Maude, 1971.   Elt’ must have heard how director Robert Altman warned his protégé: “Harold could typecast you for years:” In fact, Cort’s next movie was not until 1977.
  2. Christopher Reeve, Superman, 1977.

Director Michael Schultz, said Rolling Stone critic Paul Nelson, “would seem to need direction merely to find the set, let alone the camera.” Which explains why he saw Elton, Bob Hope or Barry Manilow as Mr Kite…   No, Allan Carr was not producing!
  4. David Hemmings, The Rainbow, 1989.    Brit director Ken Russell saw David as Uncle Harry in the Women In Love prequel. LA did not: “No names, no film!” Russell’s wife suggested Elton, who was enthusiastic about working with Russell, who directed his only movie, Tommy, 1975, and his Nikita video-clip. The usual “personal reasons” and “emotional problems” got in the way… of Elton’s nerve. He kept bombarding Ken with queries: Did he need a voice coach, acting lessons, what about his glasses, his hair – get fitted for a wig or bring his own? David, help!
